The European Technology and Innovation Platform for Photovoltaics publishes its renewed Vision 2025: “Imagining Europe’s Energy and Economy for 2050”

Brussels, 17.07.2025: The European Technology and Innovation Platform for Photovoltaics (ETIP PV) has released its updated Vision 2025 entitled “Imagining Europe’s Energy and Economy for 2050”, setting out a renewed path to harness the full potential of photovoltaics in achieving a climate-neutral, secure, and sovereign European energy system.

Solar PV is central to Europe’s clean energy and industrial strategy. As a pillar of the EU Green Deal, REPowerEU, and Fit-for-55, it supports decarbonisation, electrification, and energy security. In light of increasing geopolitical tensions, ETIP PV’s Vision 2025 places solar PV at the core of Europe’s energy and industrial transformation, highlighting its scalability, affordability, and sustainability.

The ETIP PV Vision 2025 key messages:

• Policy defines the success of PV technology made in EU
• Sector coupling and storage are key drivers for high PV implementation rates
• Sustained competitiveness of EU PV manufacturing through innovation
• Widespread digitalisation of PV's entire value chain
• Reliability of PV technologies delivering energy security and cost efficiency
• Circularity along the value chain emerges as a core feature of PV in Europe

By 2050 PV will:

• Provide 50% of final energy consumed in Europe
• Be the backbone of Europe’s energy system actively contributing to its stability
• Support the global competitiveness of the European economy
• Be at the heart of Europe’s energy security and system resilience

A Call to Policymakers, Industry and Society

ETIP PV calls for coordinated European action to create favourable market conditions, support innovation and manufacturing, and prioritise sustainable and circular value chains. Europe must act now to ensure it does not miss the opportunity to lead in one of the most strategic energy technologies of the 21st century.
